Iron-on patches are a practical and decorative accessory that can instantly liven up your clothing or textiles. To achieve perfect results, it’s important to apply the iron-on patch correctly. In this article, we’ll explain how to do it step by step.
Surface Preparation
The first step is to thoroughly prepare the surface. Make sure that the iron-on transfer and the fabric you’ll be applying it to are clean and dry. Remove any dirt, fabric scraps, or lint to ensure a perfect bond.
Temperature Settings
Setting the temperature of the heat press (iron) correctly is crucial. We recommend setting the temperature between 150 and 170 °C. If you’re using a standard household iron, set the temperature just below the maximum; that should be sufficient. Iron-on transfers adhere best to fabrics with a lower polyester content.
Placement and Ironing
Place the fabric on a flat, stable surface, such as an ironing board. Position the iron-on patch where you want it and make sure the fabric is wrinkle-free. If necessary, iron the fabric to smooth it out.
Cover the iron-on transfer with, for example, baking paper or a piece of cotton fabric, and begin ironing. Apply steady, even pressure and thoroughly iron the entire surface, including the corners and edges. The entire ironing process should take about 15 to 20 seconds.
Tip: If necessary, you can carefully turn the fabric inside out and repeat the ironing process on the reverse side for 5 to 10 seconds.
Check to make sure all the edges and corners are well glued, and iron them if necessary.
Cooling and Washing
After ironing, let the iron-on patch cool completely — at least 30 minutes without touching it. This will ensure that the iron-on patch adheres perfectly.
You can wash fabric with iron-on patches ( max. 40 °C) only after 24 hours, once the patches have completely hardened.
By following these steps, you’ll achieve perfect results when ironing on your iron-on transfers. Once you’re satisfied with the result, you can start creatively combining iron-on transfers to liven up your clothes or fabric accessories.
